Marathons and Triathlons

Make your Israel tour into a marathon experience. Israel's winter is great for running, as the mild weather conditions make for a pleasant experience. Whether it’s a marathon below sea level in historic Tiberias, an environmental adventure near the Dead Sea or a triathlon in sunny Eilat, you can combine a great athletic experience with valuable lessons about the topography of the country. Jerusalem and Tel Aviv generally host annual races – a half-marathon and 10k in Jerusalem, a full marathon and shorter 5 and 10k races in Tel Aviv and an Ironman competition in Tiberias.

Races in Israel also attract some world-renowned runners and given the smaller numbers of entries, a more intimate experience for a first-class sporting event.

Off-road biking has taken off as a popular sport in Israel, although it involves a certain amount of risk given the attitudes of Israeli drivers. City dwellers also use their bikes as an easy mode of transportation – especially in flat Tel Aviv as opposed to hilly Haifa and Jerusalem. In Tel Aviv, you can rent a bike at one of the many locations around town ride along the beach promenade, in Yarkon Park or through the busy city streets. Tiberias is also a popular bike rental town, with several rental shops that offer bikes for a day, a great way to see the whole of Lake Kinneret.

You’ll have the most fun out of the cities and off-road, where you can sightsee as you huff and puff up Israel’s most popular hiking areas, which have also become popular places for mountain biking with marked trails.

Consider making local issues a focus of your Israel tour by taking part in the Arava Institute Hazon Bike Ride. Held each May, participants cycle 280 miles from Jerusalem to Eilat, focusing on issues as diverse as coexistence, the environment and peace. Riders from all over the world – all races and religions, come together to share an incredible experience as they ride the hills of the Jerusalem Forest, descend to the Mediterranean Sea, climb the hills of the Negev desert, finally descending into Eilat.
